The first two choices lie somewhere outside the time frame of the bulk of the collection - Chet as featured member of the 1952-1953 Gerry Mulligan Quartet, playing his signature tune, 'My Funny Valentine,' along with 'Moonlight in Vermont.' From there, Keepnews jumps to Baker's brief period as. Referencing Chet Baker Sings, LP, Album, RE, 180, DOL797H. My copy of this pressing sounds good. The disc is flat, centered and quiet. Whatever the source material is it has been well cut to vinyl and the result is an enjoyable record.
This is an album that I’ve been listening to on repeat lately. Its chill as anything you could possibly imagine. Chet Baker’s voice is smooth as silk and his trumpet playing equally so. The arrangements of these smooth and slow jazz standards are extremely tight, and augmented by some very nice piano and bass playing, and the drumming is tasteful and complementary. This is perfect listening for driving or late night relaxing. If you’re not familiar with jazz, you still may know the song “Like Someone In Love”, as Björk does a fantastic version of it on her album Debut. I highly recommend this album, as it is a great entry point into cool jazz and his highly accessible both to new jazz fans and old, and is very much an enjoyable listen start to finish. Recommended Accessibility Difficulty Level: Moderately Easy [X] indicates a stand out track.
